Yep. Use a good strong tape like Gorilla tape. Otherwise the pressure inside will shoot the straw off and make quite a mess.

Re: Baffle sealing to engine w RTV

I always liked using the large McDonald’s straws to get into the hard-to-reach spots. That’s assuming you live in a free state that hasn’t banned them.

Re: Lancair mechnic

Flight Metrics is at KRDM. They’re very knowledgeable on Lancairs and do great work. I work with them regularly and highly trust their work.

Re: LOBO Training Devours the Swiss Cheese

Dan, The door frames I’m accustomed to seeing on IV-Ps have a bigger cutout for the latch arm to go through. As Bob P said, there is no way for the latch to grab the frame itself, but that it partly due to the interference the upper latches would have unless the door was fully down. On your door fra...

Re: LOBO Training Devours the Swiss Cheese

Dan,

I’m glad to hear you’re safe and the airplane is (mostly) in one piece. Well done handling an incident like this.

The photos you mentioned don’t seem to be attached. Can you post them? I’m sure we’re all curious how everything looks.

Thank you.

Re: Legacy copilot brakes

Hamid,

I would highly recommend replacing the plastic brake lines with braided stainless steel flex lines. The plastic lines will fail at some point when needed the most (greatest brake pressure applied). It’s a matter of when, not if, they fail.

Re: Crankshaft failure data points - large bore continentals.

The major overhauler I mentioned earlier, who knew of a large number of cracked cases & cranks…he did not seem to be the type to submit a SDR “oh well, another busted engine, let’s get in with fixing it”. Dave, I have a couple observations on all of this. First, the engines that I know of that ...

Re: Crankshaft failure data points - large bore continentals.

Dave, I believe this type of failure was really only seen on Performance Engine builds, and it occurred on a large percentage of them. If this was a problem fleet-wide on 550s there would almost guaranteed be an AD or advisory letter issued by a manufacturer or the FAA. As many Cirrus as there are f...

Re: IV-P Flat Tires

Rock,

Michelin tubes seemed to fix that issue in IV-Ps I flew regularly. The Goodyear tubes were notoriously leaky.
