Re: Legacy copilot brakes

Hamid,

I would highly recommend replacing the plastic brake lines with braided stainless steel flex lines. The plastic lines will fail at some point when needed the most (greatest brake pressure applied). It’s a matter of when, not if, they fail.

Re: Crankshaft failure data points - large bore continentals.

The major overhauler I mentioned earlier, who knew of a large number of cracked cases & cranks…he did not seem to be the type to submit a SDR “oh well, another busted engine, let’s get in with fixing it”. Dave, I have a couple observations on all of this. First, the engines that I know of that ...

Re: Crankshaft failure data points - large bore continentals.

Dave, I believe this type of failure was really only seen on Performance Engine builds, and it occurred on a large percentage of them. If this was a problem fleet-wide on 550s there would almost guaranteed be an AD or advisory letter issued by a manufacturer or the FAA. As many Cirrus as there are f...

Re: IV-P Flat Tires

Rock,

Michelin tubes seemed to fix that issue in IV-Ps I flew regularly. The Goodyear tubes were notoriously leaky.

Re: Cheap Garrett Powered Propjet

What is the difference between the IV-PT and the propjet? It’s a different name for the same aircraft. My guess is the term “Propjet” was borrowed from the Piper pre-Meridian PT6 conversion STC, and it just stuck. As far as the IV-PTs go, there was no official name differentiation between the Walte...

Re: Propeller Advice for Lancair ES

I think the MT is super-smooth, but it wears much faster than I think it should. I’ve flown several planes with MT props, and all of them wear with pitting, paint wrinkling, chipping, etc. I have also seen a number of MTs that had blade delamination. One small chip that goes through the outer fiber...

Re: Friedel Wingtips on a IV-P

Hello all... Anyone have experience flying a IV with the Friedel tips? If so, any thoughts on performance? Cost? Etc? I'm partial to the aesthetics of the X-Pros but my understanding is that there are no plans for them to manufacture more of them "...for the foreseeable future." Bummer. T...

George,

How much time do you have on the engine?

Re: Leaning to Peak TIT -50 / -75

Hi Ken. There’s a lot to cover here. Any thoughts on using peak TIT as the reference point for leaning a TSIO 550-E? This is SOP in a Cirrus with a TSIO 550-K. Well, I should clarify: the actual SOP is to use the computer generated cyan target for leaning; but leaning "manually" to lean of...
